Fuair The Shandrum Céilí Band a ainm ó Pharóiste Sheandroma i dtuaisceart Chontae Chorcaí. Bhí an banna seo in ard a réime ó na 1950í go dtí na 1970í agus iad ag seinnt do dhamhsóirí sna hallaí móra go léir i dTuaisceart Chorcaí. Is préamhaithe sa traidisiún céanna atá an banna reatha a bhfuil an tóir chéanna orthu is a bhí ar an dream a chuaigh rompu ceol a sheinnt ag céilithe agus coirmeacha ceoil in Éirinn agus thar lear. Ceoltóirí óga atá sa ghlúin nua, ceoltóirí a ghnóthaigh ardghradaim i gcomórtais na mbannaí céilí, idir shóisear is shinsear. Tá cumhacht, fuinneamh agus croí an bhanna fós ag teacht leis an seantraidisiún, cé go bhfuil a gcuid féin déanta ag an dream óg den cheol. Athbhunaíodh an banna i mí na Nollag 2016 agus bhí lán a’ tí ann nuair a sheinn siad le chéile den chéad uair i gCois na hAbhna, Inis an Chláir, do Chéilí Bliantúil na Nollag

The Shandrum Céilí Band takes their name from the Shandrum parish in North County Cork. The band was in existence from the 1950s through to the 1970s, playing for dances and céilithe in all the major halls across North Cork. The current band, that has links to their predecessors, is in high demand across the country and abroad to provide music for dances, concerts and céilithe, much like the old band had in their heyday. The present day band have a line up of young musicians who have all achieved success on the céilí band circuit, winning medals in all the age groups right through to senior level. The power, drive and lift of the band are a salute to the way the old band played whilst having a distinctive sound of their own. The band was formed in December 2014 and played their first engagement in Cois na hAbhna, Ennis, for the annual Christmas Céilí to a capacity attendance.

Lean an banna nua seo ar aghaidh ag seinnt do dhamhsóirí sna hallaí ar fud Chorcaí, Luimnigh agus an Chláir. Is iad a bhuaigh Craobh na mBannaí Céilí ag Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2015 i Sligeach, an chéad bhliain dóibh páirt a ghlacadh sa chomórtas. Rinne siad gaisce eile mar tá siad ar cheann de na trí bhanna céilí ó Chorcaigh– Banna Céilí Abhainn Ealla in 2007 agus Banna Céilí na hAbhann Bige in 2012 – a chroch leo an chraobh seo. Dála an scéil, is le Craobh Chrónáin de Chomhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann atá bunaithe i gCillín an Chróinín i dtuaisceart Chorcaí a bhaineann an trí bhanna seo.

The band continued to play for dancers in halls across Cork, Limerick and Clare under the guise of ‘The Shandrum Five Counties Céilí Band’. Participating for the first time in 2015, the band were crowned Senior Céilí Band champions at the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Sligo. This achievement made them one of the few bands in the history of the competition to have tasted victory in their debut year. The Shandrum also made history by being the third céilí band from Cork ever to win the competition, following the Allow in 2007 and the Awbeg in 2012. Incidentally all three bands hail from the Craobh Chrónáin branch of Comhaltas in Freemount, north county Cork.

Tá taispeántais shuntasacha déanta ag Banna Céilí Sheandroma tar éis dóibh teideal Seaimpíní na hÉireann a bhaint amach. Sheinn siad ar Fleadh TV de chuid TG4, agus roghnaíodh iad do chlár teilifíse RTÉ, Fleadh Cheoil, rud a chuir faoi bhráid lucht féachana níos leithne iad. Tá dea-chuimhní acu ar na hoícheanta a sheinn siad ar phríomhardáin na Fleidhe i Sligeach agus in Inis os comhair na mílte, cúpla nóiméad tar éis dóibh craobh na hÉireann a bhaint amach. I measc na n-ócáidí speisialta eile ag a sheinn siad bhí ceadal ceoil don Mhéara i Halla na Cathrach i gCorcaigh, craoladh den chlár Céilí House de chuid RTÉ Raidió 1 agus na taispeántais cheiliúrtha a sheinn siad dá dteaghlaigh agus lucht tacaíochta nuair a d’fhill siad abhaile ó na comórtais.

The Shandrum have had many noteworthy appearances since being crowned All-Ireland champions. A live broadcast on TG4’s Fleadh TV and further televised performances on RTÉ’s Fleadh Cheoil programme have brought the band’s music to a wider audience. Among their most fondly remembered performances are those on the main gig rigs at Fleadha Ceoil in Sligo and Ennis in front of thousands of spectators, having been crowned champions only minutes earlier. Some other memorable performances include; a recital for the Lord Mayor of Cork in Cork City Hall, a broadcast recording on RTÉ Radio 1’s Céilí House and performances in front of family members and supporters at their celebratory homecomings.

Ba mhór an onóir dóibh freisin seinnt in Áras an Uachtaráin ar Lá Fhéile Pádraig 2016 agus i gCaisleán Bhaile Átha Cliath don Chomóradh Stáit Oifigiúil ar Éirí Amach 1916. Bhí an tUachtarán Mícheál D. Ó hUigínn, baill den tSeirbhís Chabhlaigh, gaolta fhir agus mhná an Éirí Amach agus aíonna speisialta ó gach cearn den domhan i láthair ag na himeachtaí seo. Bhí an rath arís orthu i gCraobh na mBannaí Céilí ag Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2016 ach is é an rud is fearr ar fad leo ná na damhsóirí agus cairde a tharraingt amach ar na hurláir ag céilithe ar fud na tíre, mar a dhein siad ag an gcéad taispeántas i gCois na hAbhna.

The band were also privileged to perform at Áras an Uachtaráin on St. Patrick’s Day 2016 and in Dublin Castle for the Official 1916 Rising State Commemoration. In attendance at these events were President Michael D. Higgins, members of the Irish Naval Service, relatives of the men and women of the rising and many dignitaries from across the world. Since 2016 the band has gone on to achieve further success in the All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band competition but there’s nothing they love more than to play for set dancers and friends at céilithe around the country, just like the ones in Cois na hAbhna, where they had their very first performance.
